Start with corrosion, temperature, strength, forming route and cost before comparing individual grades.

304/304L cover many general uses, 316/316L are considered for chloride exposure, while 410, 420, 430 and 440C require attention to magnetism, hardness and heat treatment.

The grade must be confirmed together with wire, bar, tube or strip form; the overall grade list does not mean every form is available in every grade.

Agree the chemistry basis, mechanical properties, finish, dimensional tolerance and required material documents.

Construction hardware, petrochemical equipment, marine parts, food and medical components prioritise different properties; critical use follows project standards.
